Founded in 1825 and named after Peter Robinson who directed a large settlement of Irish immigrants to the area. The town was incorporated in 1850 with a thriving population. In 1893 the Peterborough Canoe Company was founded and has gone on to make the world-famous Peterborough Canoe. Later it became a tourist centre for people visiting the Kawartha Lakes Region.
The canalization of the Otonabee River and the building of the world's highest hydraulic lift lock in 1904 created the link between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. A system that is used extensively today by campers and boaters.
The city boasts two centres for learning, Trent University and Fleming College. There are numerous secondary schools available to younger students. Recreation facilities are numerous with both summer and winter sports. There are several fitness centres available to the public with one dedicated to seniors and others to families.
Shopping is no problem as the city has two large shopping malls, Landsdown and Portage and plenty of street front stores.
Peterborough has a modern hospital founded in 1999, the Peterborough Reginal Health Centre a 518 bed hospital and numerous other medical and walk-in clinics.
Housing in Peterborough offers an extensive variety of opportunities. With large, beautiful estate buildings and modern homes located near parks and recreation sites as well as apartments and condos.
Transportation within the city and to other major sites is available with Train, bus, and highways available. Vehicle travel to downtown Toronto from Peterborough is 138 km/ 1 ½ hours by car. Via Train is available as well the Go-Bus system.
